MABOTE HOUSE

A 10 Bed luxury bush home for private use, Limpopo, South Africa.
The 2010 Football World Cup, hosted by South Africa, brought about the client’s love affair for the country and the bushveld, in particular. as a family retreat away from their native France, the client’s brief was to create a home away from home, yet fully immersed in everything South African.
Drawing on the premise of the farm house, the house balances a contemporary design with the rusticity of an old farm house. By treating the locally sourced materials in an authentic nature, the design is paired down to well designed spaces and simple structural components, placing the importance on the setting, rather than the building itself. Notwithstanding the large footprint, the residence sits low within the landscape, allowing the building to retain its understated nature. Large overhangs and patio spaces emphasise the importance of outside living in what traditionally can be a relentlessly hot climate.
With a client placing his trust in his professional team, the design was approved at its second iteration. The only uncompromising feature of the project was that all elements, from materials to interior items, were to be locally produced, making this project proudly South African.
